BACKGROUND
The Design Journey program began in 2023, combining cultural exploration, design observation, and research into the cultural elements of Japan, rooted in its history and long-standing creative traditions. This program focuses on exploring various aspects of life in Japan, ranging from traditional and modern architectural design, visual arts, to environmental preservation practices carried out by Japanese society. During the program, students have the opportunity to visit historic cities such as Kanazawa and Fukushima, contemporary design hubs in Tokyo, as well as other creative cities like Chiba, which offer a unique blend of modernity and tradition.
This field class program employs a Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) approach to facilitate students' interaction with local communities in Japan. Through this approach, students are directly involved in observing and learning how Japanese society incorporates cultural elements into public space design, art, and architecture. Students also have the opportunity to engage with local design practitioners, discuss ideas, and learn how Japanese local wisdom is applied in various design contexts. This includes approaches to nature preservation, such as how urban parks and forests are maintained, and how traditional and minimalist design elements are adapted into modern architecture.
Therefore, this event aims to organize the Odysign Tabimatsuri Exhibition with the theme “Celebrating the Exploration of Design & Culture through Design Journey,” which will be held at the Faculty of Creative Industries (FIK) in early 2025. This exhibition serves as a means to disseminate the results of the Design Journey travel program, aiming to showcase various creative works resulting from the exploration of design and culture in Japan through the perspectives of Indonesian design students. Additionally, this event seeks to highlight how the Design Journey experience has inspired international class Visual Communication Design (DKV) students in creating audio-visual works relevant to the exhibition theme.
The exhibition is designed as an interactive space that allows visitors to experience the uniqueness of Japanese culture through the perspectives of international class DKV students at FIK.
